When most people hear the word “longevity,” they think about living longer. Increasingly, however, researchers are focusing on something equally important: healthspan, how well we live during those years.
Studies have shown that healthy aging is influenced by far more than genetics. Strong social connections, a sense of purpose, lifelong learning, creativity and meaningful engagement all play important roles in supporting physical, emotional and cognitive well-being.
These concepts are at the heart of the recently launched Longevity Club at The Carlisle Naples, a luxury senior rental community owned and operated by Senior Resource Group (SRG), LLC. Inspired by Marc Middleton’s book “Growing Bolder,” the Longevity Club encourages residents to challenge outdated assumptions about aging and embrace opportunities for growth, connection, and personal fulfillment. Through discussions, videos and shared experiences, participants explore practical ways to enhance their physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.
One of the central themes of the club is learning to say “yes” to new experiences. For some residents, that recently meant stepping onto a stage.
Last month, a group of Carlisle residents came together to create a resident-led 1950s variety show. What started as a simple idea grew into a months-long collaboration involving singers, musicians, performers, organizers, emcees and volunteers. Residents selected songs, coordinated rehearsals, planned refreshments and worked together to bring the production to life. More than 100 residents attended the performance.
While audience members enjoyed an evening of nostalgia and entertainment, the performers were experiencing something even more meaningful.
“There were about 16 performers, and we met three times a week,” recalled resident Carol Souers. “No one is perfect; we’re just having a good time.”
The rehearsals became much more than preparation for a show. Residents gathered after dinner to sing, laugh and spend time together.
“It gave us something to look forward to,” said Souers. “It was a very positive thing.”
Research consistently shows that purpose and social connection are among the strongest predictors of healthy aging. Having meaningful activities, maintaining friendships and engaging in lifelong learning can contribute to improved emotional well-being and greater life satisfaction.
Resident Natalie Lewis witnessed these benefits firsthand while serving as master of ceremonies for the performance.
“These types of events provide us opportunities to share talents we may have thought we lost,” she said. “We were able to strengthen our self-confidence and realize that no matter our age, we can contribute.”
Lewis was particularly inspired by the joy she saw on the faces of the performers.
“It helped give others the incentive to live life to the fullest and do what they enjoy,” she added.
For resident Paul Helmut, who helped coordinate the production while also performing, the experience demonstrated that personal growth doesn’t stop at retirement.
He spent months helping organize rehearsals, coordinating technical details, and preparing his own performances. For him, the project reinforced one of the things he values most about community living: the opportunity to stay socially engaged and connected through shared experiences.
At The Carlisle Naples, residents are proving every day that some of life’s most rewarding opportunities can happen long after retirement.
