Volunteering Tied to Longevity

By Greg Pascucci

Volunteering Tied to LongevityA recent article in AARP, The Magazine highlighted the importance of older adults volunteering. “Planning to Live to 100? Volunteer!” linked being of service to others with lower mortality rates and less depression. And, as the article mentioned, the older the volunteer, the greater the personal benefits of volunteering.

At The Carlisle Naples, opportunities abound for residents to give back to the active retirement community and the community at large. In fact, thanks to The Carlisle’s maintenance-free lifestyle, residents find they now have more time to pursue their volunteer efforts.

The community’s fulltime Program Director is instrumental in helping bridge the gap for residents wishing to volunteer their time and talents. Want to share your expertise with neighbors? She can arrange a class, handling the logistics and invitations. Wish to bring attention to a worthwhile cause? She can help with inviting a speaker to the community to help educate others. Without having to worry about the details, resident-volunteers can immerse themselves in their charitable work.

Older adults have a wealth of wisdom that can be imparted on the younger generation and residents take advantage of The Carlisle’s partnership with Sabal Palm Elementary School. Several times a year, students visit the community during special holidays such as Easter and Halloween. Residents volunteer to make arts and crafts, read with students or make goodie bags for the youngsters. There’s even an end-of-the-year field trip were residents can serve as chaperones.

“Our residents are always excited to welcome the first graders,” said Executive Director Frank White. “They also like the option of being as involved as they wish – without having to commit for a set period of time. They can spend an afternoon with the children volunteering or they can help out over a series of days preparing for the visit. Residents like having that flexibility.”

The article also noted data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that found states with a high volunteer rate have lower incidences of heart disease.

Residents at The Carlisle can reap these same benefits by participating in any number of volunteer options available within the community. From serving on the Resident Council as a liaison between staff and residents, to volunteering in the sundry store and leading activities for residents at the onsite assisted living community, there is something to pique every interest.

“Volunteering can renew [your] sense of purpose and prevent the social isolation that is a recognized health hazard…,” writes Eric J. Schneidewind, AARP president and national volunteer spokesperson.

Organizations in Collier County always have a need for volunteers. Collier County Public Library, Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society are just a few.

Here are a few tips for finding the right organization:
• Find a cause you’re passionate about.
• Consider your strengths and talents. In what area(s) would you make the most impact?
• Remember, you can volunteer for as much – or as little – time you wish. You should feel happy to serve, not obligated.
• Think small. You don’t have to volunteer at the most recognized charities. There are many local nonprofits that may make a great alternative. A quick Google search of topics you’re passionate about should yield results.
• Know that you’re never too old to make an impact in someone’s life or help change the world.
