Interventional Radiology

Interventional RadiologyInterventional radiology, or IR is a sub-specialty of radiology that utilizes minimally invasive image-guided technology to both diagnose and treat a multitude of medical diseases and disorders.

A board-certified physician will use images to direct catheters, needles and other instruments through a tiny incision. The physician is able to see through a small camera that is placed through the catheter. The guided images are placed on a screen through X-ray, CT, MRI or ultrasound. This allows the physician to see organs, arteries and tumors to decipher diseases, and complications. They can perform biopsies, aspirations, place drains and also treat issues, like cancerous tumors, uterine fibroids, atherosclerosis (vascular plaque), gastrointestinal bleeding and heart disease.

IR Specifics
• No large surgical incisions
• Tiny nick, the size of a pins head
• Shorter recovery time
• Outpatient procedure
• Usually no general anesthesia is required
• No large scars
• Diagnostic evaluations easier than with open surgery
• Clear concise treatment of various diseases
• Often less costly than with traditional surgery
