The FDA, which does not regulate dog food stepped in and in July issued a warning to pet owners feeding their pets grain-free diets.
The significance of these findings is that dogs of various breeds and size were developing heart issues, specifically those of enlarged hearts. Canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a severe condition that debilitates and kills. DCM enlarges both chambers of the heart, and the heart is no longer able to pump sufficiently. It stresses the heart and usually evolves into CHF (chronic heart failure). Many of the dogs affected had a deficiency of taurine in their blood. Taurine is an amino acid found in animal tissue. It is prevalent in chicken, beef, bison, and fish.
One of the speculations is that legumes such as peas, lentils, and chickpeas are to blame. When manufacturers replaced grains like rice, corn, and oats, they began to add in legumes, which are very healthy for humans, but apparently not so much for canines.
