TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION (TMS) is a procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. This noninvasive therapy helps to alleviate the symptoms of depression.
The TMS device, which has magnets embedded inside it, is placed on the scalp and sends magnetic pulses into the brain,
where they generate an electric current.
The magnetic pulses are focused in the brains area that naturally controls emotions, known as the prefrontal cortex. In depressed patients, this area of the brain often shows abnormal patterns of activity.
Patients are fully awake and aware during their treatment, as TMS therapy requires no anesthesia or sedation, and it is completely non-invasive. This 37-minute therapy immediately gets the brain stimulated and essentially kicks it into a non-depressed mode.
Many patients feel completely different after just one treatment.
Patients that do not respond well to the normal therapy and medications for depression are prime candidates for this innovative therapy. TMS therapy usually consists of approximately 36 treatments given 3 to 5 times per week. The full course is normally completed within 4 to 6 weeks.
TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION
• Magnetic pulses target key areas of the brain
• Technology is similar to that of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
• Each in office treatment takes 37 minutes
• Patients receive therapy 5 times per week for 4 to 6 weeks
• During treatment patients are awake and alert and can go back to their normal activities immediately afterward
• There are no side-effects and no medications
• 100% non-invasive procedure
