Summer Safety Tips From Palm Coast Physical Therapy

Summer Safety Tips From Palm Coast Physical TherapyDuring the summer months, we’re dreaming of our upcoming vacations, time at the beach, outdoor events, and amazing destinations. But when the time comes for our travel or fun to begin, there are often injuries that can coincide.

When traveling for long distances, whether by car, plane, or other means, we can become somewhat cramped up in small spaces. It’s wise to take breaks, get up and stretch and move if possible every 1-2 hours to keep the muscles flexible and the blood circulating to prevent injuries. Moving throughout the trip as well as maintaining good posture can help limit stress on the spine, shoulders, neck, back, and hips.

It’s also essential to think about the heavy luggage that you’ll need to lift in and out of the car or place in the overhead bin. Is it too heavy, and do you know how to lift it correctly? Lifting from the waist is not a good idea as it can put extreme stress on your back. Bending your legs is the proper way to lift heavier objects. Try to pack as lightly as possible and ask for help if you’ve got several bags.

For exercise and sports enthusiasts, the summer months can be unbearably hot. Besides the risk of heat stroke and cardiovascular issues, working out in the summer heat can cause muscles to cramp and strain. It’s best to exercise outside when the weather is cooler (early morning/evening), or even better, working out indoors or in a pool is optimal to avoid injury. Stay hydrated, avoid caffeinated and sugary drinks, and be smart about the heat.
