Residents at The Carlisle Naples Reap Health Benefits of Volunteering

Health Benefits of VolunteeringNational Volunteer Month recognizes the many ways people give back to their communities. While volunteering is often associated with helping others, research shows it can also provide powerful health benefits for the giver.

Studies consistently link volunteerism with lower stress levels, improved emotional well-being and greater life satisfaction. Staying engaged in meaningful activities helps reduce feelings of isolation, stimulates the mind and even encourages physical movement, all important contributors to healthy aging.

For many older adults, retirement doesn’t mean stepping away from purpose. It simply opens the door to new ways of contributing.

“Volunteering keeps you connected to the world around you,” said Natalie Lewis, a resident at The Carlisle Naples, a luxury senior living rental community. She recently spearheaded an intergenerational board game event with students from Community School of Naples. The activity brought together residents and eighth graders for an afternoon of classic tabletop games, reminding participants that sometimes the simplest forms of connection can bridge generations. Lewis noted that the event was a chance to “throw it back to a time when games brought people together,” while giving students and residents the opportunity to learn from one another.

Intergenerational activities like this are increasingly recognized as beneficial for both younger and older participants. For seniors, interactions with students can spark curiosity, stimulate memory and create a sense of shared purpose. For young people, the experience provides a valuable perspective and mentorship.

At The Carlisle Naples, residents find a variety of opportunities to stay engaged both within the community and beyond. According to Executive Director Amanda Ignasak, the longevity of the staff and residents has helped create strong relationships with organizations throughout the Naples area.

“Because so many of our team members and residents have been part of the Naples community for years, there is a wealth of connections that naturally open the door to volunteer opportunities,” Ignasak said. “Those relationships allow residents to stay involved in meaningful ways and continue contributing to causes that matter to them.”

Some residents volunteer by leading interest groups or facilitating classes for neighbors. Others lend a hand in the community library, organize social gatherings or visit friends in the assisted living neighborhood to provide companionship and support.

Giving back also extends beyond the community’s walls. Residents regularly organize donation drives supporting local causes. Food drives and clothing collections help benefit organizations across the Naples area, while residents frequently rally together for charitable initiatives that reflect their shared values.

Sometimes volunteerism takes on a more creative form. Resident Sally Ray, for example, recently volunteered to design and create festive Derby hats for neighbors attending an upcoming Kentucky Derby viewing celebration.

These activities may appear simple, but their impact is meaningful. Purposeful engagement can strengthen emotional health, reduce stress and help older adults maintain a strong sense of identity and connection.

You don’t have to commit hours every week to experience the benefits of volunteering. Small acts such as mentoring, organizing a donation drive, helping a neighbor or sharing a skill can provide the same sense of fulfillment. It also nourishes the mind, strengthens social bonds and contributes to healthier, more vibrant aging.
