The Key to Vibrant Living is Social Relationships and Connections

A recent study by the Pew Research Center found Americans age 60 and over are alone for more than half of their daily measured times. Research shows that social isolation can pose health risks.

Socialization can be beneficial even in a one-on-one setting. The documented health benefits of spending quality time with a close friend over lunch or being part of a group volunteer activity are the same: stronger immune system, improved cognitive health, better physical health, lower risk for developing memory-related disorders and greater self-esteem.

Here are some fun and creative ways to strengthen social connections:

Volunteer
Many organizations in Collier County can benefit from older adults’ breadth of knowledge. From libraries to hospitals, there are numerous opportunities to be with others while giving of your time and talents. It’s a great way to form meaningful relationships while reaping the many benefits associated with volunteering, such as improved self-esteem and reduction of stress and anxiety.

Embrace Technology
Older adults are among the fastest-growing groups of Internet users. Getting online can be an excellent tool for keeping in touch with family members who live out of state. Local libraries and senior centers offer computer/smartphone classes to help seniors connect with their adult children and their grands and great-grands via video conferencing or social media.

Learn a New Hobby
There’s no easier way to connect with others than over a shared passion. From scrapbooking and card games such as Bridge to crafting and knitting, there are hobby groups ready to welcome new members. Check the calendar section of the local newspaper for dates and times for upcoming meetups.

Adopt a Dog
In addition to encouraging a more active lifestyle, owning a pet is a great way to meet and interact with others. Much like the weather, people enjoy talking about their pets. Plus, research shows that pet ownership can improve quality of life, lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels. The local Humane Society is a great place to adopt a senior pet that enhances your lifestyle.

Consider a Senior Living Community
As we age, our social circles tend to get smaller. For older adults living at a retirement community, the opposite is true! Residents at The Carlisle Naples, a luxury active retirement community, have the option of being as engaged or as relaxed as they pleased. Neighbors become friends as they participate in any number of activities together—from exercise classes to outings and special celebrations. At a senior living community, there’s always something to do and someone to do it with. Plus, a maintenance-free lifestyle ensures residents have time to rediscover passions or find new interests, which provides even more opportunities to strengthen social bonds.

Use a Car-Share Service
Having access to safe, reliable transportation can open up endless possibilities. In addition to the ability to maintain their social circles, access to transportation can foster a sense of independence. For older adults who may be intimidated by car-share services such as Uber and Lyft, companies such as GoGo Grandparent service as a middle-man, dispatching a car service via telephone. Residents living at The Carlisle Naples and retirement communities have access to scheduled transportation services. Doctors’ appointments, local retailers, museums, cultural venues and more are just a few of the monthly destinations.

“Socialization is a key component of successful aging,” said The Carlisle’s Executive Director Bill Diamond. “At The Carlisle, our Zest Department is charged with appealing to residents’ mind, body and soul. We not only encourage residents to lead an active, healthy and engaged lifestyle, we challenge them to do so by providing opportunities to create first-time experiences. In addition to creating relationships over past hobbies, careers, etc., residents are able to create new memories with neighbors and develop meaningful friendships.”
