Over the years, many alternative healing modalities have provided options for individuals that in the not to distance past, experienced the traditional medical care system. In my parent’s lifetime, they only experienced traditional medical doctors.
When discussing various alternative healing modalities, I am referring to hypnosis, acupressure, acupuncture, mindfulness meditation, and Reiki only to name a few. While all of these alternative modalities are wonderful and effective, the purpose of this article is to discuss hypnosis.
So what is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, achieved through guided relaxation, to access the unconscious mind. Hypnosis is used for memory recall, medical treatment, and skill enhancement or personal growth. To understand hypnosis more, an understanding of the unconscious mind is helpful.
The unconscious mind is the part of the mind, out of your awareness. The unconscious mind is responsible for many things such as preserving the body, running the body, is the domain of the emotions, stores memories, makes associations and learns quickly, organizes all your memories, sometimes represses memories with unresolved negative emotions, presents repressed memories for resolution, may keep the repressed emotions repressed for protection, is a highly morale being (the morality you were taught and accepted), enjoys serving and needs clear orders to follow, takes everything personally, is symbolic, does not process negatives, controls and maintains all perceptions, generates, stores, distributes and transmits “energy”, maintains instincts and generates habits, needs repetition until a habit is installed, works on the principle of least resistance, is programmed to seek more and more, and functions best as a whole integrated unit.
In summary, the unconscious mind creates change and empowerment. It is fully responsible for all learning and behavior. Hypnosis allows us to bypass the critical faculty, the meeting point of the conscious mind and the unconscious mind, so that behavioral change and learning can occur.
Hypnosis is powerful because of the mind-body connection we all realize today. So hypnosis is an awake state, a state of relaxation, actively using your imagination, and your unconscious mind. In hypnosis you are in rapport with your unconscious.
Hypnosis is the ultimate display of control. No one, including hypnotists, can make you do anything outside of your value system. You are in full control. If you are willing and able to follow directions, hypnosis can be successfully achieved.
Hypnosis truly can change your life! For over 15 years, I have been successfully utilizing hypnosis to guide individuals to achieve personal and professional excellence in areas such as letting go negative emotions and limiting decisions, to quit smoking, lose weight, eliminating stress, career changes and performance. This is a “do with” process and not a “do to” process. By that I mean, for the process to work successfully the client actively takes responsibility wanting to improve certain areas of their life.
In 1996, I lost my son John to suicide. He was 17 years old. His 15-year old brother Michael found him. Michael was a mess, seeing a good psychiatrist, in and out of psyche wards and on serious medication. The core problem, his grief and trauma, were not being addressed. After a year of traditional treatment, I was referred to a Hypnotist. When Michael walked out of that one appointment and said to me, “Mom, if I can feel as good as I do right now some of the time, I will be ok.” This is where my journey with Hypnosis began.
