Hair Restoration is not what a lot of people think. We are not your hair stylists or barbers. Hair Restoration is an area of medicine that has been sadly over looked and under researched for a long time. Due to this under appreciation in medical research, many “snake oil” products have been pushed on the market giving people false hope. Why? The desire to have a healthy-looking head of hair exists in all of us, who doesn’t want to look their best? Women and men alike base their self-confidence on how their hair looks.
Did you know? Women make up 40% of hair loss sufferes in the U.S. Unfortunately, there are over 80 million Americans with hair loss. Women making up over 40% of those suffering from this condition we call Alopecia, the medical term for hair loss.
Over the last few years there have been great strides and advancements in the field of hair loss. New procedures that have significantly improved the look of a hair transplant. The old plug method that left people looking like a doll’s head are gone. The strip method, that left an unsightly scar on the back of a person’s head are still in use today, but quickly fading into obscurity.
We now have medications that help, but again these are no cure for thinning and can only stave off the inevitable. Currently there is the up and coming field of stem cell therapy, as well as, the use of specific cellular components like exosomes that are showing great promise. A current treatment called PRP, (Platelet Rich Plasma), has been very effective in helping with female pattern hair loss or FPHL. Currently there is research taking place with the “cloning: of hair follicles. This is where a healthcare provider will surgically remove one of your own hair follicles, send it to a lab where they will reproduce your own hair. That hair, (as much as you want), can then be transplanted back into your own head.
Imagine that, 1 or 2 follicles can give you back a full head of hair? Medicine is not quite there, but some believe that within 2 years this will be reality. Until then, medicine will continue to research other treatments and modalities for this condition.
Each month I will present therapies and treatments that are currently available. My goal is to help educate you on thinning hair, hair loss and what you can do to improve this problem.
Thinning hair doesn’t have to be something you only talk about with your stylist or barber. They are an excellent first line resource to go to and they can keep you looking your best with what you have. HHR of LWR wants to improve that hair so you can go to your stylist with confidence.
