Frequent Colds? See the Chiropractor!

By Dr Deanna Barbaro

Frequent ColdsAs we face cold and flu season, avoiding illness is top priority. Avoiding exposure and contamination is not always possible. People generally try boosting their immune systems through natural supplements. There is yet another capable defense you can add to your arsenal of disease fighting weaponry: chiropractic care.

Is everyone vulnerable?
Often, when there is a group of people working together in close quarters, one person may become ill and spread contamination to their coworkers. Upon exposure, not everyone becomes ill. Not everyone catches the cold that they were exposed to. Breathing cold viruses does not in and of itself cause colds. Are some people more resistant to disease than others? What makes one person more resistant than another?

Experimenters have incubated cold viruses, placed them directly on the mucous lining of the nose, and found that their subjects came down with colds only 12% of the time. These odds could not be increased by exposing the subjects to cold drafts, putting their feet in ice water to give them chills, or anything else that was purely physical.1

The Chiropractic Approach
We are constantly exposed to bacteria, viruses and parasites with the potential to make us very ill. Yet, most of us do not get sick very often. Your body is usually able to fend off these assailants using your wonderous immune system designed to protect and fight against these infections organisms. What makes you vulnerable? For germs to overgrow into an infection this natural defense system or “resistance to disease” must be low.

Our nervous system is threaded through our entire spine and runs throughout our body. It is the means the brain uses to communicate proper function of all body systems. It works with the immune system in order for the body to adapt to various conditions, and when required – to heal appropriately. Spinal misalignments, known as subluxations, can cause neural dysfunctions which can lead to a stressed or weakened immune system. Chiropractic care can help raise your natural resistance to disease by removing this serious interference to your optimal body function. Chiropractors are specifically designed to detect, locate and correct subluxations.

Case Studies
Male 5-year-old child with malformation of cervical spine, skull positioning and severe scoliosis has absence of T-cells, not vocalizing well, immune dysfunction and suffers from frequent colds. Surgery had been considered to correct skull positioning. Child underwent a series of chiropractic adjustments. He was reevaluated 6 months later. Results showed improvement in scoliosis, normalization of head positioning and vocabulary, and there were no evident colds experienced during any of these months.2

In another case study, peripheral blood was collected from patients 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after a chiropractic adjustment with a placebo group receiving “sham adjustments” (physically manipulated but not adjusted). The study looked at certain immune system cells and found they were stronger in several ways after patients had spinal adjustments. These same differences did not show up in patients who had received “sham adjustments”. They also did not show on those who only received soft-tissue work without a spinal adjustment.3

In 1975, Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventative Medicine Institute and professor of medicine in Environmental Health at New York University, began developing scientifically valid methods of estimating individual susceptibility to various chronic diseases. In his research, he discovered that various kinds of spinal cord injuries are accompanied by a high risk of developing lymphomas and lymphatic leukemias. This connection led Dr. Pero to consider chiropractic as a potential alternative for reducing the risk of immune breakdown and disease.

In 1986 he collaborated with a chiropractor, Dr. Joseph Flesia, chairman of the board of directors for the Chiropractic Basic Science Research Foundation, Inc. Measuring 107 individuals who had received long-term chiropractic care, they found that chiropractic patients had a 200% greater immune-competence than people who did not receive chiropractic care. They also had a 400% greater immune competence than people with cancer or other serious diseases. All chiropractic patients were “genetically normal” meaning they had no obvious genetic reason for increases resistance or susceptibility to disease. Amazingly, this immune-competence did not show any decline with age, despite a wide range of ages in the study group. It was uniform in the entire group! His conclusion: “Chiropractic may optimize whatever genetic abilities you have. I’m very excited to see that without chemical intervention … this particular group of patients under chiropractic care did show a very improved response. These changes occur from chiropractic treatment”.4

In Conclusion
Corrective Chiropractic care could make the difference between a quick recovery and lingering colds and flus. Rather than suppress your immune system with strong medications, harmful vaccines or antibiotics that do not fight viruses, use chiropractic to effectively boost your natural disease fighting immune system. Dr. Deanna Barbaro of A Better Life Chiropractic uses X-ray imaging and clinical postural evaluations to assess spinal misalignments.
