Danielle Gates, CFP®, Financial Advisor
Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the direct correlation between wealth and health. In recent years, there have been several epidemiological and sociological studies on the socioeconomic status of individuals and their overall health. Health inequalities between the upper, middle and lower class occur in countries with Universal Health Coverage, so we cannot entirely blame it on our access to healthcare.
It seems somewhat derogatory to say that people with money have fewer health problems, as we know this is not always the case, but there are new findings that are substantiating this is true most of the time. Although it’s not clear-cut and there are some flaws in these studies, many researchers agree that a psychosomatic cause and effect has a great deal to do with the outcome of this messaging.
According to Dictionary.com, the precise definition of psychosomatic is (of a physical illness or other condition) caused or aggravated by a mental factor such as internal conflict or stress. It’s all in the mind, stress-related, stress-induced, subconscious, relating to the interaction of mind and body.
People who are stressed over money, the loss of income, unemployment, or other financial stressors, often are physically affected and are more susceptible to infectious disease and are vulnerable to succumbing to numerous illnesses and disorders.
In light of these findings, discovering ways to change our economic status to help improve our health are of key importance for our aging population and those that want to prevent psychosomatic and stress-induced disease.
