Tips for Staying Independent as You Age

Tips for Staying Independent as You AgeOur nation will celebrate her 242nd birthday on July 4th. Known as Independence Day, it commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

This month, we encourage older adults to begin taking steps to maintain their independence as they age. According to research, seniors who were active and engaged, retain better cognitive function and live independently longer.

Here are a few tips for maintaining your independence into your 70s, 80s and beyond:

Get Moving
Mobility has a significant impact on one’s independence. Experts cite exercise as the number one way to combat immobility. Whether taking a Tai Chi class to keep muscles flexible and increase range of motion or a brisk walk to improve balance and coordination, the link between exercise and independence cannot be overlooked.

At The Carlisle Naples, opportunities abound for residents to stay active. Classes range from water fitness to Wii bowling, a virtual game which has been shown to offer many of the same real-world health benefits.

Add Color to Your Diet
Proper nutrition is key to warding off diseases such as diabetes and ailments like high blood pressure and arthritis, all of which can negatively affect one’s independence. The summer months are the perfect time to take advantage of the season’s rich bounty of fruits and vegetables. Local farmer’s markets offer a variety of options for those wanting to add more color to their diets.

The Carlisle’s culinary team, under the guidance of Executive Chef Marlon Perez, ensures residents savor the flavors of fresh, healthy food choices year-round. The active retirement community provides meals that are not only delicious but nutritious. In addition to providing a culinary experience that caters to residents’ tastes and desires, the on-site restaurant, The Carlisle Room, offers heart-healthy menu options.

Maintain Connections
Older adults who maintain strong social connections have been found to remain independent longer than their peers. Socializing with others improves physical health, psychological well-being and even strengthens our immune system, keys to living a longer and healthier life.

Unfortunately, as we age, our social circles become smaller. At senior living communities such as The Carlisle, there’s always something to do but more importantly, someone with whom you can enjoy an event or outing. At The Carlisle, it’s all about freedom to spend each day as you wish. Whether enjoying an intimate dinner with your spouse or joining girlfriends on a trip to the east coast of Florida, there’s an activity to pique every interest.

Stay Sharp Mentally
The old adage “use it or lose it” is true of brain health. New research has found that contrary to popular thinking, older adults’ brains create just as many new cells as younger brains. Among the many ways Harvard Health recommends people keep their brain active – despite age – is to continue learning new activities, believe in yourself and use all your senses.

The Carlisle Naples’ upcoming Summer Olympic Challenge is perfect for staying mentally alert. Residents will engage in friendly competition, battling it out for bragging rights in events that will test them physically and mentally. Challenges include Scrabble, Name That Tune, Jeopardy Golf Chipping and Baseball Pitch.

“As one resident pointed out, ‘Living at The Carlisle is a reminder that we haven’t left the mainstream of life’,” said Executive Director Bill Diamond. “We create an environment for positive and successful aging by focusing on the dimensions of wellness. Our activities, classes, lectures and programs are stimulating and encourage residents to live their very best life.”
