Anxiety

AnxietyThere are many causes of the disease known as anxiety. One cause responsible for anxiety in women and men over 40,which is not as widely known as others, is testosterone loss. Additionally ,after age 50, estradiol depletion can play a major role in anxiety as well. Before using bioidentical hormones to treat the other symptoms of hormone loss, many women have been put on anti-anxiety medications such as Ativan or Xanax, only to come back and report that they are still suffering from sleepless nights and anxiety. However by looking at the direct cause, you can truly address the underlying hormonal issues. Until recently even providers educated in bio-identical hormone therapy did not realize the massive impact on testosterone depletion and anxiety in both men and women. In fact, the atypical hot flashes that women experience can be scientifically associated with elevated anxiety levels.

There are many studies available which focus on the fact that elevated FSH and LH even PRIOR to menopause can cause atypical “hot flashes”. They have been described in numerous ways, one of which was an anxiety attack or overwhelming anxiety, or just an overall sense of worry all the time. The anxiety attacks were related to brief oversecretions of FSH and LH from the pituitary gland that did not feel hot or generally sweaty (although sweating could accompany the anxiety), like a hot flash, but was perceived as an anxiety attach with fast heart rate, fear and jitteriness. The surge of FSH/LH destabilized the neurotransmitters of the brain and instead of stimulating the temperature center, it stimulated the area of the temporal lobe that controls mood, causing a brief but severe anxiety attack. By replacing testosterone and estradiol when appropriate, the surges subsided and so did the anxiety attacks. In fact, many female patients can even tell when their testosterone pellets, a preferred method of bio-identical replacement are wearing off by a recurrence of these anxiety attacks.

Bio-identical pellets are implanted by a minor in office procedure, and are repeated every 4 months for women, and 6 months for men. They have a large impact on overall well being and a wide variety of relief for hormonal related symptoms. If you are suffering from anxiety or other hormonal distress, don’t wait!
